Uprooted

Uprooted is a creative, capacity-building initiative designed to support young artists and cultural workers who are interested in working with children and youth from refugee communities in Jordan. The project explores critical questions of identity, belonging, and heritage—specifically through the lens of displacement and forced migration.

The program begins with an interdisciplinary workshop week combining music, voice, dance, movement, photography, video, and installation. In the second week, participants work in smaller groups to develop new interdisciplinary works addressing themes such as home, uprootedness, and cultural identity. These works are shared with the public in a final performative event.

Led by internationally recognized artists—choreographer and teacher Benno Voorham (Sweden/Netherlands), visual artist Abdalla Al Omari (Syria/Belgium), and theatre director and puppeteer Husam Abed (Czech Republic/Jordan)—the program offers in-depth training in physical storytelling, theatre improvisation, dramaturgy, object animation, voice, and rhythm.

Uprooted not only cultivates artistic skills but also addresses the emotional, social, and cultural dimensions of displacement, contributing to long-term resilience and expression within marginalized communities.
